The Ugandan I met at the college by Hazel Ward
Teaching
In 1976 1 joined Decorum College to set up a literacy scheme for adults. One of the courses we ran was full time and helped people brush up their English reading, writing and understanding skills and how to write CVs and go for job interview. Sudha Brahmbhatt came on this course. Sudha had come to live in Hemel Hempstead in 1973 and I first met her she told her story at a meeting in 1977 about escaping Uganda. What a difficult, sad time that had been. Despite all this hardship Sudha, like fellow Ugandans, was committed to live in new country and community. She was always so hard working that she was bound to succeed and succeed she did! She went on to do many jobs helping other people through the Decorum Multicultural Association. She also initiated Sarla Pimplekhare and Sarjaha Hussian to teach English to migrants from abroad. She was so good at cooking that I encouraged her to teach adults Indian Cookery. Her first course was in 1983 and her students loved it.
Barncroft School
Later her husband, Arvind came to do a teaching skills course and I was able to help him with his teaching the children on Saturdays at Barncroft School. Even later I met them again on the committee of Hemel Anti-Racism Council. I think Sudha and Arvind are special representatives of the sprit and determination of the Ugandans who came to settle in Hemel Hempstead. They have given so much to the life of the town and to me.
